Nobody should leave Menorca without visiting this charming little port within the big one – it must have been created on some special god’s whim to moor and shelter the Menorcan fishing-boats known as llauts! At night the lights from the town’s buildings and the restaurants on the quayside are reflected in the bay, where the boats gently sway on their moorings. It’s the perfect setting for a seafood dinner – or in fact any sort of meal as there’s plenty to choose from at the right price. On summer nights street-vendors set up charming little stalls and sell their wares. And a morning in Cales Fonts is just as irresistible. You can watch the fishermen come in with their catch, and perhaps a few locals taking a dip off the jetty. Across the water lies the magnificent and impenetrable Lazareto Island, where all the ships were obliged to stop for their crew and passengers to be checked for any contagious deseases such as the bubonic plague.
