Sa Mesquida is a coastal stretch located next to the coastal village with the same name, situated at 6,5 kilometres from Maó, and it includes Cala Mesquida (rocky area) and Arenal de sa Mesquida (a beach which is normally frequented by the residents of Maó), separated by Punta de sa Torre. This shell-shaped quite big sea inlet is located between Punta de sa Creueta and es Pas Gros ('the big pass'; 45 metres above the sea level), and in front of its coast you can see Illots d'en Mesquida. Arenal de sa Mesquida is characterized by a sandy surface, the orientation is toward southeast, it is surrounded by vegetation, and it has calm crystal clear water with a rocky ground. This coastal area is very popular amongst the divers, especially the small islands located in the west of the cove. The area between sa Mesquida and s'Esperó has a depth that ranges between 21 and 43 metres. The marine and underwater conditions for anchoring boats are not good. In the east of sa Punta de sa Creueta there are several dangerous sandbanks and a strait. You can only navigate here with small boats. In 1781 the Hispanic French troops disembarked in sa Mesquida to conquer Menorca. This attack failed and the island continued in British hands, who built a defence tower (Punta de sa Torre) in this place. In total they built 11 towers in Menorca between 1798 and 1802.
