Cavalleria is situated at nine kilometres from es Mercadal, located between Punta des Vernís and de Ferragut. This coastal stretch is sheltered by the impressive Cap de Cavalleria (the northernmost cape of Menorca, with cliffs that rise 80 metres above the sea level, with spectacular panoramic views; you can reach it from the beach walking along a trail). It belongs to Àrea Natural d'Especial Interès de Cavalleria. This sea inlet is characterized by being the origin of two virgin coves with fine-grained golden sand, it has the shape of a shell, it is quite big, with a system of dunes and a rare fixing vegetation at the rear, gentle slope, an orientation toward north, gentle breeze, the swell is moderate, and there is an area for mud baths on the right side; it is surrounded by medium-high cliffs and it is frequented by small boats. Nudism is usual. The marine and underwater conditions for anchoring boats are not safe. Next to Punta des Vernís there is a reef, known as s'Escull d'en Vernís, and the strait is very dangerous. The best shelters are Port de Sanitja or Cala Torta. The accessibility by car is easy following the signs. The last stretch is in bad conditions. The private car can be left on a free parking area in the surroundings. These characteristics explain that the beach is not very crowded by local visitors and tourists. This sand beach is some 10min walk from the free parking. It is quite crowded. The water is crystal clear, of a turquoise color, and there are nice shallow caves to explore. There's not much of underwater life.
Son Bou or Platges de Son Bou is situated at eight kilometres from Alaior, located between Punta Rodona (with the Torre Esfondrada, a defence tower of the 19th century) and Cap de ses Penyes (next to a paleochristian basilica), as well as next to the villages Son Bou, Sant Jaume de la Mediterrània and Torre Solí Nou. This beach belongs to a u-shaped sea inlet which is the origin of a huge bay, completely open to the sea. It is also characterized by being the longest coastal stretch of Menorca, with 2,4 kilometres in length, and it has a sandy surface, the slope is gentle, it has crystal clear water, and the beach is very crowded by local visitors and tourists. The biggest system of dunes and the second most important wetland of the island can be found at the rear, behind s'Albufera des Grau, which both belong to the Àrea Natural d'Especial Interès. The marine and underwater conditions for anchoring boats are excellent if the weather is good and the wind is not blowing from the north or northeast. In the central area of this beach there are some rocks, so that you are not recommended to approach the coast too much. In front of the coast, at about three hectometres, you can see Escull de sa Galera, an emerging rock around which you can navigate with a big boat. Macarella is situated at 14 kilometres from Ciutadella, located between es Castellet de Macarella and Punta de na Xulla, it belongs to the Àrea Natural d'Especial Interès of the south coast of Ciutadella, and it is considered to be one of the most beautiful beaches in Menorca. It is a virgin and isolated u-shaped cove, not very big, surrounded by high cliffs, covered by thick pine trees, there is a wetland inhabited by eels and sea turtles, a canyon, a stretch of the Camí de Cavalls located at the rear, which gives a quite wild aspect; the beach is sandy, there is crystal clear water, the slope is gentle, the swell very moderate and it is not very crowded by local visitors and tourists. It is the typical menorcan landscape. The coast gets higher, becomes steep and inaccessible, except at the sea inlets which are normally also the mouth of a torrent or a canyon, with beautiful bathing areas and excellent shelters in the sea. The marine and underwater conditions for anchoring boats are good on a sandy ground, although it is open to the winds from the southwest-south and you have to approach the coast carefully because of the rocks. In the nearby and more sheltered Cala Macarelleta there are signs and you can anchor on the eastern side, on a sandy ground with a depth of four metres. Cala en Turqueta is situated at 10 kilometres from Ciutadella, located between Punta des Tambors and na Foradada, as well as below the Talaia d'Artrutx. The name is given by the attacks of Turkish pirates. This virgin and isolated beach is the result of a sea inlet which is 400 metres long, which is the origin of this beautiful cove, which is not very big, surrounded by the high cliffs of the adjacent headlands, covered by thick pine woods, which belong to Àrea Natural d'Especial Interès of the southern coast of Ciutadella. This is the typical menorcan landscape of the south coast. This coastal stretch is semicircular. Some rocks in the middle divides the beach with fine-grained white sand into two. This flagstone is at some metres in the sea. Another attraction of this place is the crystal clear water, the gentle slope and the exposition to the winds from the southeast-south-west. The marine and underwater conditions for anchoring boats are good if the boat is smaller than 12 metres and has a maximum draught of two metres. It is not very deep on a sandy ground and the best anchorage, with buoys, is located in the western area. The accessibility by car is easy following the signs. The private car can be left on a free parking area at 850 metres from the beach (about 15 minutes walk) with 120 places. You will have to pay to reach the beach and park in the surroundings. nevertheless the beach is not too crowded by local visitors and tourists. Platja de Macarelleta is situated at 14 kilometres from Ciutadella, located between es Castellet de Macarella and Cala Macarella. The name is given by the small size and the name of the big sister. This isolated virgin beach is located on the eastern side of the sea inlet which is also the origin of the nearby Cala Macarella. It is located at the end of another sea inlet, which is smaller, narrow and perpendicular to the bigger one. It is surrounded by high and steep cliffs of the adjacent headlands, covered by thick pine woods, which belong to the Àrea Natural d'Especial Interès of the south coast of Ciutadella. This landscape is typical for the southern menorcan coast. Then the coast gets higher, it becomes steep and inaccessible except at the sea inlets and the mouth of a torrent or canyons, where you can find beautiful bathing areas and excellent sea shelters. This beautiful cove is shell-shaped, it has fine-grained white sand, a gentle slope, crystal clear water, it is exposed to the wind from the east-southeast and it is not very crowded by local visitors and tourists. The marine and underwater conditions for anchoring boats are good because it is quite more sheltered from the wind than Cala Macarella. There are two options to anchor in this bay: in the eastern area, where there is a depth of four metres, or in the west, on a sandy ground. The accessibility by car is easy until Cala Macarella. Then you have to walk on a trail for 1,45 kilometres. When the beach has a lifeguard service, you must follow the lifeguards' instructions and the warnings on flags. Cala Pregonda is situated at 10 kilometres from es Mercadal, located between Platja de Binimel.là and Cap de s'Alairó. In front of its coast you can see Illot and Esculls de Pregonda (habitat of the rare seagull Audouin). This beach is considered to be one of the most beautiful and less frequented beaches of the abrupt northern Menorca. It is nearly virgin, quiet and it has a low influx of local visitors and tourists, it is the result of a sea inlet which is the origin of a u-shaped bay, which includes an interesting system of dunes at the rear. These dunes have been formed parallel to the orientation of the wind in this area. the size of this coastal corner is not very big (170 metres long). There is a hill in the east and some cliffs in the west, which belong to the Àrea Natural d'Especial Interès of the northern coast of Menorca in the surroundings. The marine and underwater conditions for anchoring boats are good if you are careful, the beach is closed by some small islands in the north, with a dangerous strait, and it is very open to the winds from the north. Nevertheless, it has a sandy ground at a depth of about three metres, and turquoise crystal clear water. The accessibility is rather complicated. You can only reach it going along the coast from Platja de Binimel.là. The visitor has to walk about 20 minutes on a stone and mud trail.
