Son Bou or Platges de Son Bou is situated at eight kilometres from Alaior, located between Punta Rodona (with the Torre Esfondrada, a defence tower of the 19th century) and Cap de ses Penyes (next to a paleochristian basilica), as well as next to the villages Son Bou, Sant Jaume de la Mediterrània and Torre Solí Nou. This beach belongs to a u-shaped sea inlet which is the origin of a huge bay, completely open to the sea. It is also characterized by being the longest coastal stretch of Menorca, with 2,4 kilometres in length, and it has a sandy surface, the slope is gentle, it has crystal clear water, and the beach is very crowded by local visitors and tourists. The biggest system of dunes and the second most important wetland of the island can be found at the rear, behind s'Albufera des Grau, which both belong to the Àrea Natural d'Especial Interès. The marine and underwater conditions for anchoring boats are excellent if the weather is good and the wind is not blowing from the north or northeast. In the central area of this beach there are some rocks, so that you are not recommended to approach the coast too much. In front of the coast, at about three hectometres, you can see Escull de sa Galera, an emerging rock around which you can navigate with a big boat. The accessibility by car is easy following the signs and the deviations. The private car can be left on a free parking area in the surroundings. You can also reach this beach with the public transport during the summer season. When the beach has a lifeguard service, you must follow the lifeguards' instructions and the warnings on flags. A red flag indicates dangerous swimming conditions and means that swimming is not permitted. A yellow flag indicates that precaution must be taken, but that swimming is permitted. A green flag indicates that swimming is permitted. An orange flag is used to indicate that the lifeguard is absent. Act cautiously when no lifeguard is present or the service is not available and enjoy the beach without taking any unnecessary risks. For health and safety reasons, the municipal ordinances ban pets on beaches. This beach has received the 14001 environmental certification. Information about this beach may change.
