Cala Fontanelles (it is a shelter) or Cala Fontanelles is situated at 11 kilometres from Ciutadella, located between Punta de s'Après or Blanca and de ses Fontanelles. From the coast you can see Escull de ses Vinyoles. This isolated sea inlet belongs to the bay with the same name, surrounded by the Punta Roja and de Fra Bernat. This bay includes also Cala Algaiarens (beaches es Bot and es Tancats), Codolar de Biniatram and Cova d'en Guàrdia. The marine and underwater conditions for anchoring boats are good because it is a good shelter from the strength of the sea on the menorcan north coast. This virgin sea inlet is characterized by being u-shaped, it has a small size, the beach has pebbles and sand, it is exposed to the winds from the northwest-north-northeast, a gentle breeze, the water is calm, the slope is gentle, it is not very crowded by local visitors and it is surrounded by vegetation. This coastal area belongs to the impressive mountainous landscape of la Vall (3125 hectares), including la Falconera (207 metres high hill), thick pine trees, scrubland, agricultural land, lakes, system of dunes, spectacular cliffs and virgin beaches. This coastal stretch and the interior of Tramuntana de Menorca belongs to the Zona de Especial Protección para las Aves by the European Union and Àrea Natural d'Especial Interès by the Parlament de les Illes Balears. The accessibility by car is easy following the signs until Cala Algaiarens. The last part has to be done on foot on a trail by the cami de Cavalls. When the beach has a lifeguard service, you must follow the lifeguards' instructions and the warnings on flags. A red flag indicates dangerous swimming conditions and means that swimming is not permitted. A yellow flag indicates that precaution must be taken, but that swimming is permitted. A green flag indicates that swimming is permitted. An orange flag is used to indicate that the lifeguard is absent. Act cautiously when no lifeguard is present or the service is not available and enjoy the beach without taking any unnecessary risks. For health and safety reasons, the municipal ordinances ban pets on beaches.
