The collections Hernández Sanz - Hernández Mora are exhibited since 2015 in the historic building of Ca n'Oliver, the magnificent Oliver’s family house, exponents of the bourgeoisie of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in Mahón. This property stands out for its interior decorations in the ceilings realized by Italian painters, its imperial staircase that becomes a symbol and the tower. Among the contents of the exhibition we find the Oliver’s family history, a review of the British Menorca, the importance of the port of Mahón, historical cartography of the island, how was life in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in Menorca and the enormous artistic legacy of the Hernández. There is also a printmaking section by the Insular Council of contemporary Menorcan artists or related to the island. The center also consists of a temporary exposition hall and an auditorium. The Hernández Sanz-Hernández Mora collections are made up of graphic work, furniture, decorative arts and an extensive library of menorcan origin. They were donated by the teacher Joan Hernández Mora in 1983 and by Javier Hernández Montesinos in 1999. With the donation made by the latter, who was the grandson of Francesc Hernández Sanz and nephew of the former, the great family collection, which was initially started by Hernández Sanz, was once again reunited. In 2005, the artistic work of Francesc Hernández Mora was also added with a donation by Antoni Seguí Parpal. • TIMETABLE Sumer ( 1 of May to 30 of October) Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday: 10:00 to 13:30h and 18:00 to 20:00h Sunday: 10:00h to 13:30h Monday: Closed Winter ( 1 of November to 30 of april) Thursday, Friday, Saturday: 10:00 to 13:30h and 18:00 to 20:00h Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday: 10:00h to 13:30h Monday: Closed
The Minorca Museum is actually the old Franciscan Convent. Its origins date back to the 17th and 18th centuries. The old convent has been variously used as a nautical school, public library, high school and children's home but since 1989, it has housed the museum which traces the evolution and history of Minorcan customs. The Diocesan Museum of Menorca is located in the quarters of the former San Agustín convent in Ciutadella. The convent was left uninhabited after Mendizábal’s disentailment laws of 1835, and then came to be owned by the state. The building once again became the property of the bishopric of Menorca in 1858, which used it for the Diocesan Seminary. Until 1619, the primitive San Agustín convent was located in the port, but in that year it was moved to its current location. The Baroque-style convent building was built between the 17th and 18th centuries. Noteworthy features include the semicircular arches and the Nuestra Señora del Socorro church, in a pure Herrerian style. It was inspired by San Felipe el Real in Madrid, which is also from the Augustine order and was built in the same period. The inside of the church was decorated with frescoes in the early 19th century. It also boasts a magnificent Baroque organ built by Josep Casas i Soler in 1794.

At this time the medieval walls that surrounded Ciutadella began to be built in imitation of those of Perpignan. Five bastions are built to protect the five doors that opened in the walls, one of which was called the sa Font portal, where the bastion is. With the attack of the Turks of 1558, the walls are destroyed, but reconstruction is not carried out until the late seventeenth century, because of the crisis suffered by the city following this event. Between 1677 and 1692 the current bastion of sa Font is built, with military purpose. And wheat is stored in it, from the income of tithing. Its solid exterior appearance without almost any opening responds to this military function. In 1869, once the defensive function was lost, the bastion passed to the Public Treasury. In 1881 the lots of the walls are auctioned, and the City Council buys the bastion to turn it into a historical monument, and the rest of the cloth of the walls surrounding the city is demolished in 1889. In 1902, in the bastion warehouses, a gas factory for public and private lighting in the city was inaugurated at the initiative of the General Acetylene Lighting Company of Barcelona. The bastion in its origin also had a cistern function, with a capacity of 250,000 liters and was supplied with rainwater. Taking advantage of these characteristics, in 1925 the pipes that from the bastion will supply water to the city are inaugurated, and the first public fountain of Ciutadella is opened. With the entry into service of the Caragolí water wells, these elements that weaken the fortification structure lose functionality; and, with the restoration of the bastion to locate the Municipal Museum there, these elements are eliminated. The restoration works of the building begin in the eighties and are not completed until 1995, when a new phase of use for this monument, declared BIC, begins as the seat of the Municipal Museum of Ciutadella Abrir en el Traductor de Google Enviar comentarios Resultados web translate.google.com › ... Located in the Quarter de Cala Corb, the building was constructed by the English in 1771.
Main theme: Ethnology Molí de Dalt in Sant Lluís is a beautiful reminder of the three windmills that characterised the typical architecture of the village - founded by the French - for almost 200 years. This mill may have been erected at the same time the first settlers began to build their houses in the area. Years later, the largest of the three mills, Molí d'Enmig, began operating on the high street a few metres from the first mill in 1776. Finally, Molí de Baix was constructed on a plot of land on calle Conde de Lannion in the southern part of the village in 1780. Molí de Dalt had wooden machinery with broad blades to harness wind power and rotate the mill that ground grain into flour. The mill was completely restored in 1987 and the blades and machinery for milling grain replaced. The ground floor houses an ethnology museum that has an interesting collection of farming implements, tools and utensils from traditional rural life and trades now extinct on display.

Menorca's Centro Artesanal is a meeting place for promoting both traditional and modern arts and crafts. A shop, temporary and audio-visual exhibitions and a range of different activities help local artisans garner recognition for their work. This centre was created to be a reference point in Menorcan arts and crafts and defend and promote them. It is a showcase for a wide array of ancient trades that are still being practised today, such as tapestry repairers, silversmiths and beekeepers, etc.. All of their products can be purchased at the shop on the premises. The Popular Crafts Show, a permanent exhibition, features the following elements: - Dry Stone Wall: Master Artisan Isaías Pons Florit. This technique is used to built walls exclusively with stones, without any type of mortar or cement. It has three main goals: . To protect vegetation and crops from the island's prevailing winds. . To remove stones from the land and roads to make tilling the soil easier. . To allow livestock to graze in rotation, since it divides up the countryside. This ancestral method is still in use today and it is estimated that 70,000 kilometres of dry stone wall can be found in the Menorcan countryside. - Stone Cattle Shelters: Master Artisan Isaías Pons Florit. Menorca's farmers built these rural structures with dry stone techniques to shelter pasturing livestock from inclement weather. - Wild Olive Tree Barriers: Master Artisan Miquel Gomila Salom. The Menorcan countryside abounds with wild olive trees and its hard wood was used by the island's farmers to build barriers to close off dry stone walls. Their main function is to keep cattle from wandering off. - Ceramics: Master Artisan Arturo Gener Fuster. One of the most common items in daily use in Menorcan life is fired clay. Items such as laundry tubs and water, milk or oil jugs are examples of the wide variety of popular clay pieces in use.
